UC Davis Medical Center Cancer Treatment Facility

Sacramento, CA

This new 46,000 s.f. three story Cancer Center Outpatient and Medical Office Building was constructed next to an existing building with a new outdoor plaza. The buildings were sited to provide a welcoming entry plaza that would create a strong sense of connection between the two buildings.

The connection is made in the landscape with bold swaths of planting offset with strong bands of paving to reinforce the modern lines of the architecture.

The landscape composition contrasts an open plaza with a shady bosque, creating the impression of outdoor rooms. These are social spaces designed to be flexible and allow for a wide range of activities.  It also creates quiet, protected areas where patients can peacefully reflect.  The linear planting design employs heat and drought tolerant species chosen for their contrasting colors and textures, and have been arranged to compliment the hardscape patterns.
