Saint James Park

San Jose, CA

In 1985, MPA Design worked with the city and community of San Jose to develop the Master Plan and renovations for the historic seven-acre St. James Park. The Master Plan included the design of a central plaza that fit into the fabric of the surrounding St. James neighborhood, created a focal point near the proposed light rail station, and preserved existing on-site treasures such as a large Heritage Oak. In 1989, construction of the west side plaza and historic fountain was completed, which set the stage for future design improvements.

In 2001, a recreation area with ample seating and play features was created to support activities for users of diverse ages and physical abilities. Detailed grading and excavation plans were created to ensure that new construction would not harm the existing, mature trees on site. The unique history of the park is reflected in the custom designed play equipment that recalls a small schoolhouse that once stood on the site and an antique trolley car.
