New Public Health and Forensic Lab Facilities

Fairfield, CA

As part of a ‘smart growth’ consolidation effort, the rapidly growing Solano County brought many of its government agencies onto one site.  This facility is an interesting combination of users in need of health care and public investigators solving crimes.  We accommodated a new building, a future building, and provided parking, in addition to the landscape design.  The landscape design is serene in nature to provide patients and employees a with a calming environment.  A circular roundabout greets arrivals and provides a drop-off at the building entry.  A sculptural archway provides a further  accent to the entrance.  Our planting scheme relies on varying grasses that create a soft aesthetic.  They are all drought tolerant and arranged in bold modern patterns.  We also retained the majority of the existing trees on site.  Permeable surfaces such as sand create additional outdoor rooms where appropriate.  A bioswale meanders through the site mimicking  a stream and filtering storm water before it enters the groundwater system.
