Kaiser Permanente Antioch Medical Center
MPA Design provided master site planning, and detailed design of landscape and hardscapes including landscape grading, a garden courtyard, a labyrinth, and recreational walks on a 45 acre, 4 building medical campus. Each space is individualized to establish a distinct place to assist with way finding yet is integrated with the overall design. Perimeter berms are designed to reflect the surrounding hills and are planted with drought and heat tolerant materials that screen the parking areas. For efficiency, the parking was laid out with 75° angle parking with one way drive aisles. Constraints with heavy, slow draining soil were addressed with the selection of tolerant species, and by planting on mounds. Two landscape spaces were designed for patients and visitors; a hospital courtyard “healing” garden planted with a Timber Bamboo forest, and a labyrinth for active relaxation surrounded by a large grove of Pistache trees.
