I-80 Pedestrian/Bicycle Overcrossing

Berkeley, CA

The I-80 pedestrian-bicycle overpass provides a pleasant and safe crossing for residents from the surrounding Berkeley neighborhoods to reach the San Francisco Bay waterfront. The project included the design of ramps that connect the bridge to surrounding recreation trails, the creation of scenic overlooks to the bay, two touch-down plazas, landscaping and wetland enhancements, and a ‘living wall’ sound barrier along the western edge of Aquatic Park. To enhance views from the structure, MPA realigned the overpass by six degrees so that it was on axis with the Golden Gate Bridge to the west and Grizzly Peak to the east. This alignment also highlights scenic aspects of the UC Berkeley Campus, such as the Campanile.
